Cataloochie Ski Resort
Nestled in the heart of
Maggie Valley among the Great Smoky Mountain is Cataloochee Ski
Resort, North Carolina’s oldest ski resort. Cataloochee opened in 1961 when Cataloochee Ranch owner Tom Alexander converted his mile-high pasture into a small alpine facility. Cataloochee
endeavors to maintain their southeast reputation of,
"first to open, last to close," each season while at the mercy of the climate as
the majority of their snow is manmade. Snow guns line the mountain trails, and can shoot
snow onto the slopes at a rate of 80 gallons of
water per minute over a distance of 50 yards.

Cataloochee Ski Resort takes pride in their family friendly resort by offering several lessons and programs for novice skiers and snowboarders through Cataloochee Ski & Snowboard School. Two designated learning areas make Cataloochee
Ski Maggie Valley an ideal mountain for those learning to ski or snowboard. Experienced riders and skiers may also take lessons in order to master techniques and skills. Unique in comparison to other resorts, Cataloochee Ski & Snowboard School offers lesson participants their very own lift line to maximize time on the slopes. Children’s programs are also offered at Cataloochee to make your family experience enjoyable for everyone. Children’s groups are divided by age and ability,
and a professionally trained staff shares their enthusiasm about skiing and snowboarding through full and half day sessions.
Be sure to coordinate your trip to Cataloochee with any of their annual events in order to make your ski experience an exceptional one. Cataloochee’s Christmas Day Celebration is unforgettable for children, because they can spot Santa and Mrs. Clause on the slopes. Everything Elvis Day is always
a hit, as the ski resort celebrates the King’s birthday all day long. Be sure to wish him a Happy Birthday when you spot him on the slopes. Other popular events include: President’s Day Weekend, Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend, Appreciation Days, and the Annual Season Pass Celebration Bash.
Tube World, also located in Maggie Valley, is a great playground for children of all ages. Snow tubing is the newest attraction to ski areas all over the southeast. A moving carpet transports riders to the top of the tubing hill where five runs send you screaming into the depths of Maggie Valley. Riders must be 42” tall, although if you’ve got smaller children in your party they are welcome to join other children at the Wee Bowl Snowplay Area for a minimal cost.
