Lake Junaluska is located just thirty minutes west of Asheville and east of the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Named for Chief Junaluska, a Cherokee Indian who in 1838 walked with his people on the Trail of Tears.
He later learned that members of his tribe remained hidden in the hills of the Western North Carolina Mountains,
and decided to make the trek back to North Carolina to continue his reign. Chief Junaluska did come back to North Carolina, walking
almost the entire way, and went on to lead the Eastern Band of the Cherokees until his death.
