When it comes to exploring the mountains of
Haywood County it would be tough to find a place to begin, as there are
so many opportunities. Haywood’s multiple peak landscape allows for backpacking and
hiking trips NC across the Great Smoky Mountains,
and the Appalachian Trail makes a seventy-mile
trek through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the major influences on the tourism in Haywood County. There are 850 miles of trails and unpaved roads that wind throughout
the park. In fact, seventy miles of the Appalachian Trail can be
hiked in Haywood County, as there are plenty of designated campsites and shelters surrounding the trail. Popular hikes include Chimney Tops, a strenuous trudge with spectacular views, Laurel Falls Trail, a hike that concludes at an 80-foot waterfall, and Mount Le Conte, the most often visited towering summit at 6,593 feet.
The isolated land of
the Cataloochee Valley is located in the northeast portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and considered to be nestled among the most rugged peaks in the southeast. There are three hiking trails
in particular that invite visitors to explore the abundant wildlife and take in the picturesque views of the surrounding mountains. Hiking trails like Cataloochee Divide, Caldwell Fork and Pretty Hollow Gap offer moderate to strenuous paths for outdoorsmen to conquer.
Just off of Interstate 40, lies Harmon Den Wildlife Area at the very top of Haywood County. This is a popular destination
for backpackers and hikers alike. There are several trails that lead into its interior. Harmon Den offers primitive campsites for those roughing it in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Harmon Den is also a favorite of cyclists.
Shining Rock Wilderness is also a unique place to hike. The Art Loeb Trail can be followed to the top of Cold Mountain, where Charles Frazier's historical fiction novel came to life. Cold Mountain extends into the sky to more than 6000 feet and is centered among the Balsam Mountains peaks. Shining Rock Wilderness is surrounded by an emerald paradise.
Haywood County has an abundance of ideal properties and sites that rest hillside to the beautiful green grasses of the surrounding golf courses. Haywood County has a lot to offer the family golfer upon their multiple golf courses that scatter the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Maggie Valley Golf Course is a par 72, 18-hole regulation length course that is open to the public for golfing among the lush blue grass. The course is challenging for not only beginners, but for those seasoned players as well. The front nine are referred to as the Valley Nine, and the remaining more challenging are called the Mountain Nine. Maggie Valley Golf Course can be enjoyed year-round due to the ideal climate.
Waynesville Country Club Inn & Resort is nestled among the Great Smoky Mountains in Waynesville North Carolina. The flawless 27-hole course is made up of three separate par 35, 9-hole courses atop the vibrant green color of bent grasses. Cataloochee Ranch offers horseback riding trips between the months of April and November. Cataloochee Ranch allows riders the option of riding
through their ranch or through the nearby Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Not only do they offer full and half-day trip options, but private rides are available for an additional fee. Full day rides last about seven hours and includes lunch. Cool rhododendron tunnels will provide you a sense of peacefulness and a break from the blistering sun.
Panther Creek Outfitters, located in Clyde, offers a wealth of variety to guests of the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Horses and guides are available for hourly, half and full-day rides, overnight excursions and weekend getaways. Pony rides are also available for children.
